Treating gold and silver as interchangeable "precious metals" when building a geopolitical hedge is a mistake that shows up in performance during exactly the events the hedge was meant to cover. The two metals share a monetary component but diverge sharply on industrial demand, liquidity, and volatility, and a hedge ratio built without accounting for that will underperform or overshoot in a crisis.
1. Why gold and silver decouple during shocks
Gold has almost no industrial demand base; central bank reserves, ETF flows, and safe-haven allocation drive the overwhelming majority of its price action. Silver carries roughly 50 percent industrial demand (electronics, solar panels, and increasingly EV components), so when a geopolitical shock also threatens global growth, silver gets pulled in two directions: safe-haven buying supports it while growth fears via industrial demand concerns work against it. That tension is why silver often lags gold in the first 24 to 48 hours of a shock, then catches up violently if the event resolves without a growth hit.
2. Reading the gold-to-silver ratio as your sizing signal
The gold-to-silver ratio (ounces of silver needed to buy one ounce of gold) is the simplest tool for calibrating your hedge weight. When the ratio pushes above 85, it signals silver is historically cheap relative to gold, often because a shock hit and capital defaulted to gold first. 3. Building the ratio in practice
A straightforward starting allocation for a dedicated metals hedge sleeve is 70 percent gold exposure and 30 percent silver exposure by dollar value, not by ounces. Example: if you are allocating $10,000 to the hedge, that is $7,000 in XAU/USD exposure and $3,000 in XAG/USD exposure.
